Just wondering if anyone can recommend an iPhone app for tracking cycling progress? Are there any good ones, or would I be better buying something like a garmin.

I'm not looking anything fancy just time speed distance etc. Have just downloaded strava but would appreciate any advice.

Strava is a great website, and awesome for uploading rides from other apps, but I don't find the app does enough as it even lacks current speed. Something which I like to see along with cadence.

For me it's cyclemeter. There really isn't anything it doesn't do, and you can configure each screen to view any stat. Mapmyride is also good, but I found it heavier on battery life.

Sorry, my comment may have been misleading. Strava is great for post-ride analysis (what I thought you meant when I saw 'improving'). It's not really any good for in-ride monitoring...

ViewRanger is good for both trip computer and also for planning and following a route. Closest I've seen to a sat nav for bikes.

MapMyRide is good for tracking. So is Endomondo - I don't use it any more but I often hear other riders go past with an American voice ... "4.5 miles in 20 minutes. 100 calories" or similar.

I like the look of edmondo. I will try the free one and consider the full app. Might even sign up to the challenge. I doubt however that my 16 miles 3 times a week (just starting out) will improve the stats much.

Will try both over the next few days, but as my wife has just pointed out unless my bike has an outboard motor I may be on the bus tomorrow.

nothing comes close, in my opinion

I'm a lifelong gadget man and stats master, but having used Endomondo, MapMyRide and several others I agree - I just use Strava. The only exception is if I need to navigate a complex route in which case I use ViewRanger - saves loads of time when riding the TransPennine trail where signs can be missing or misleading.
