iPhone memory storage

Anybody know about storage space on iPhones?
Trying to take some pictures the other day on my 16gb iPhone 6, popped up with storage full so I uploaded to the cloud and deleted pics from the phone thinking that would solve it but still no.
Checked storage and ‘other’ was taking up most of the space with ‘system’ taking up 6gb.
Deleted various other items and got some spare space.
Someone suggested it might be holding some back for a system update so I checked and there was one pending, updated and checked storage again, ‘other’ was then taking up 7.5gb!!

But then literally 1hr later after doing not much with the phone and definitely not taking pics or downloading I got the message up again saying no space left and turns out the ‘system’ is now taking up 10gb out of nowhere!!!

System taking up 10gb of a 16gb phone!!? Is this apples way of trying to get me to buy a new phone?

If you delete photos, they stay in a deleted items folder for a month. Try emptying that lot as well!

Did that too, I used to just leave them in there until they delete because it never caused a problem before but even after I did it I still had no storage space as if the system had gobbled it up as soon as I cleared it.

No I’m not syncing, it’s backing up photos to google photos then deleting from the phone.
Now google photos is saying it needs access to my photos and sending me to settings to authorise but there is no option to allow access!!!

have you got the bbc new app? that caches loads of stuff and can end up a real memory hogger. simply delete the app and reinstall, although you may lose 'saved for later' articles and the like.

No bbc news app, not installed any new apps recently.
It’s weird because it keeps fluctuating, it went down 1gb yesterday then back up again, switched phone off over night and this morning it was at 15gb then 15.9gb, it then went down to 5 or 6 and now it’s back up at 15.4 changed to 15.3 in front of my eyes!!!!

There is probably some sort of memory garbage collection service running in the background. Android certainly does that, but I don't know about iOS?

Been getting it for ages . I stopped everything going to the cloud and it seems to have solved it for now . I dont even know where the cloud is or what the hell i would want with it .
