I want to buy my Wife an iphone for Christmas.

It would have to be unlocked to vodafone though as her friends/family all use Vodafone and she gets free calls with their scheme.

Would she loose any functionality with that? would 3G and surfing etc all work Ok? what about apps and itunes?

Any advice appreciated ;)

it is about to come out officially on vodafone early 2010, so make her wait

applying updates to unlocked phones is risky (may brick your phone), and the apple warranty will be void

I know it is a little of topic, but have you considered one of the Android phones? I have an HTC magic on Vodafone and love it. One of the advantages is the open source nature of the widgets that people write for it.

Well I've got the option to get a 3G cheap. Really cheap in fact, it's free ;)

But, her current phone is PAYG Vodaphone. She pays £5.00/month and gets 3 people she can call for free so it's really good for her as her family members have the same system.
So, I'd want to unlock the iphone to Vodaphone otherwise it will end up costing her money to run it.

Get it panter as your temporary hacks will only have to last till the end of the year and then you can use it officially when they support it. I am rejoicing this news as I hate o2 and have been with voda a long time. I install electrical equipment which relies on mobile signals all over the UK and voda is by far the better network.

Thanks guys

I must admit I haven't been overly impressed with O2. I have an iphone with them but I'm very lucky as it's a company phone so I don't have to suffer the charges.

The coverage seems pretty poor too compared to my Wifes Vodafone phone which seems to get signal everywhere.

Out here you can get this widget called a turbo-sim

It sticks to the sim card and allows any sim to be used with the phone. This way it doesn't void any warranties as far as I can tell, cos all you have to do is remove the widget before getting anything fixed...

Be aware that if you get an iPhone wet there is a sheet inside it which changes colour so they can tell it got wet and not repair it for free.

But if you go to the right shop they can replace the sheet with a new one for you and then you can get the thing repaired for free....
