I have two elderly women friends. Both have those no internet, £10 top up each month phones. There's little use is sending them text messages as they either don't reply, saying when seeing me in person that they didn't receive the message, or they'll send me a text telling me not to send links to articles (and definitely dont send any photos!!!!) as It'll quote....knacker their phone up, sometimes even telling not to text them at all as that too will knacker their phone up. Both of the old biddies aren't without a bob or two, so why do they keep using ancient 'technology'! For a few quid more a month they could have a basic I phone with Internet access, photo taking, then sending ability etc etc, but they will not move with the times!😏

Maybe they're happy with what they have, as in it meets their needs and not what someone else expects them to use.

Too many places are making the assumption that every mobile phone in use is a "smart" phone.

Fair comment, but one of the two old lady's phone is taped up to the eyeballs after it's been dropped many times. I keep telling her to at least buy a new ten pound a month top up phone, if nothing else. 😏

If she hardly uses her phone then even £10/month is too much! Giffgaff only costs me £6/month for unlimited calls & texts and there are cheaper deals elsewhere.

What do they actually do that my budget TCL 605, £7.50 a month from Tesco can't do?

I resisted iPhones for years, thinking them overpriced jewellery for sad status-seekers. What changed my mind was a professional photographer's response to someone asking why pretty much every professional photographer has an iPhone. Long story short, he showed two identical cloudscapes, one taken on a Samsung, t'other on an iPhone. The colours were quite different. The Samsung's were brighter, more immediately impactful - they had the 'pop' beloved of the TikTok generation. But for capturing the nuance, the subtlety, the infinite graduations of the clouds and sky, the iPhone was in a different class.

I bought a second hand iPhone 11 Pro Max off eBay within the week, and have never regretted it, nor would I ever buy a phone from any other maker. (Much as I loath Apple...and I could bore you on that till the cows come home.) Because for me, a mobile is a camera with some other stuff attached. For most of the 'other stuff', your budget TCL 605 is probably just as good, or as near as makes no difference. But there's a reason virtually all professional photographers carry an iPhone, and it's not 'cos they're seeking status.

Someone once said to me that his device was a camera that could make phone calls!

Ditto,

I'm an avid but very amateur Photographer; and chose an iphone 17 ProMax this time around because:

a; The camera is ace for a fool with very little background knowledge - but just spots a shot they like the look of and 'presses the button' - like me.

b; I actually like Apple looking into and looking after my World. Some claim its invasive. I've got nothing to hide and with a super busy, super stressful work-life....having a phone that automatically collates, organises, stores, gives me options for helpful products and add-ons etc and saves me time, energy and brain-space; is a godsend.

I had this argument at work as most things they used to give out in paper form eg survey's , holiday booking etcetc are now done via app.
Don't get me started on having to use apps and qr codes to order things 😡

Fair enough, I can see your point.

In my case I always carry a pocket camera and dislike using the one on the phone as I can never seem to hold it comfortably without my finger wrapping round the lens. I wish they'd put the thing in the middle rather than one of the corners.
