As above.... has anyone got their hands on one yet? My old Archos Media Player went back to Archos late last year and DSGi sent me a voucher out for a replacement unit.

Unfortunately, the closest thing to the Archos that Currys stocks is an Ipod Touch.

Any impressions or advice?

I'm a gadget man myself but the last time I owned an Apple product was back in 2002..... owned for two weeks and sold on for a tidy profit

Yeah unless your computer fails and you lose your music.
How is it iTunes' fault if your computer dies? How is it iTunes' fault if you fail to maintain adequate backups?

(Disclaimer: I don't use iTunes myself, so if they've recently introduced a new 'Kill computer and corrupt all user data' feature with version 10, then I apologise for my ignorance and retract the above.)

In any event, you can register your iTunes account on up to 5 computers, so you could use a second PC in the household (or elsewhere) if you have one or restore your iTunes library to a new PC from backup and register your iTunes account on the new machine. In both cases, your iTunes purchases (including Apps) and anything you've loaded from CD are preserved.

Your itunes account doesn't store what you have loaded via CD. only what you have bought from apple.

Note that I stated "restore your iTunes library to a new PC from backup" and that certainly does include stuff you have loaded from CD.

Yeah but in the old days where computers broke etc and back up drives were erm expensive.

It's the way that you can transfer your music to I Pod but not Vice Versa and the way that if you move your music on your PC then I tunes has a paddy and if you do accidentally move or change your music and then sync your I pod it loses all your ratings etc.

You assume I tunes is a new fangled program not one that's been around for many many years

That would be over 10 years ago i.e. erm before iTunes was available.

iTunes defaults to wherever the My Documents (XP) or Libraries (W7) folders are located. You use Windows to relocate these folders to, say, the D drive and iTunes will automatically follow the re-assignment performed by the OS.

and if you do accidentally move or change your music and then sync your I pod it loses all your ratings etc.
as will most software if you start moving the data files around and expect the software to still keep track of them.

On the contrary, I am fully aware of iTunes' history and lineage. I didn't say that I'm ignorant of it, just that I don't use it. ;)

Edit: Oh wait – that appears to be exactly what I said. Well… I'm not, okay!
