Apart from that, I'll see how far I can increase my annual distance without taking it very seriously or to the point where cycling is not fun anymore ... can I do a 5-figure total (in continental units

Today's commute was remarkably benign, not too cold, not too wet, not too windy in the morning, same again in the evening, happy days. I felt so much more awake and was more productive than on my bus commute day yesterday ... there is a pattern there, cycling is good for me.

. Possibly part of a gas vent, won't know until the morning. Getting very tired of this constant wet and windy weather though. Another roof claim on my insurance this year (would take it to 3 in 5 years) and I could be in trouble come renewal time.
Got my bike back after a service tonight, took it out and was blown away (figuratively, then literally by the wind) by the difference.
1. Max speed before was 29 mph down a massive hill - easy got to 35 mph without pedalling like a mental guy. How is this possible? They fitted a new bracket - the bike is 6 months old so was dubious about it needing a bracket, but the difference in the bike is amazing!
2. Brakes better but realised maybe it was my expectations that were wrong. Have been judging them on the back brake - basically I can't stop the bike very quickly at all with the back brake. But the front is strong, and both together stop the bike no problem. The back brake seems weak though - is this just what brakes are like.
3. Hail and 40 mph wind (may be an exaggeration) directly into my face prompted me to think I need a balaclava. Any recommendations for a cycling one that doesn't melt your face?
4. Cars can't bunny hop traffic islands. Man tried to get past me, drove over the traffic island at at least 40 mph, lost half bumper and probably exhaust. He was raging but was absolutely his fault!

Feather Front and back brakes, pulling both together could lock the wheels and send you off
Re balaclava, get yourself a running snood, can be pulled up to be a balaclava when needed, and good to have around neck to keep chill off rest of the time. I got mine from running shop by costa coffe in stirling.
