Is 8 enough or do we need more?

On my commute, I use 6 of my gears, out of 21, and most of the time it's just 4. Hoping to go to just one gear in the next few months....

Road bikes have 7/8 on the rear, and I like a fairly straight through block (1 tooth increments) - I can see where 10 or 11 speed would be useful !

I was pretty glad of my 27" bottom gear on the Fujin today - I made it up the infamous Cudham Hill from Downe without stopping. Well chuffed I am, and it's an achievement for me, if rather less so for stronger cyclists.

462 gears!!!!

Who's with me? Any takers?!

Hmmm, I think the drawback would be needing to carry the manual with you, to tell you the order of changes to get the progression...

I have 7 or 8 on my winter hack, and 21 or 24 on my summer one (see, I don't even know how many I have!) and in normal use, I use 3 or 4 of them. On a hilly ride on the summer bike, I might use 6 or 7....

I have 30 gears on my road bike, I use all of them (including occaisionally the extreme angle ones) with no "favourite" gears. I shift through the range a lot to keep things moving with an optimal balance of effort speed, I like to enjoy my ride. sometimes I do shift both front and back at about the same time to get just the right gear. Gears ranges may have overlap but that doesnt mean waste! it means that within the overlap range you have even more slight variation, I dont think theres many setups where the gear inches are identical between any two combinations!

Due to alignment problems my knees do hurt when trying to push to big a gear up a hill, I like my triple. I probably wouldnt complain about losing some overlap but I like a low bottom a high top and plenty of steps between!

I live in a very hilly area, with lots of gradient changes I like to make full use of my gears. Sure at one time I used to use a single speed bmx locally when I was a kid (in fact my first bike was fixed and single speed - I hated it) but then I also got off and pushed on some hills back then, and can go far faster and further now... Gears are good - if you have a use for them. If I lived somewhere flatter with occaisional hills Id love a lower maintenenace single speed. Far less hassle Im sure.

I have been looking at new road bikes and find that most of them have far too high upper gear ratios. It's not changed since I started back in the early Seventies. A 50 x 12 ratio is a racing gear. I've never understood why manufacturers lumber us with these useless specifications.
42 x 14 (or 81 inch) is as high a gear as any leisure/commuter/touring cyclist would ever need.

Down to just ten (high) gears after recent gear/chain problems and I coped with the headwind also.

…Why do you say its an 18 speed bike when its only got 9 gears – 6 on the back and 3 on the front – 6 and 3, that makes 9…

Hmmm don't know if this is a sort of lee wind up as the different combinations on my bike make 30 gears.

Even though I haven't done the maths though I suspect some combinations are the same on my bike.

The gear ratios on my 21 speed are as follows.

4.1 5.5 7.0

3.6 4.8 6.1

3.2 4.3 5.4

2.8 3.9 4.9

2.6 3.5 4.4

2.4 3.2 4.1

2.0 2.8 3.5

As one can see 4th gear and 8th gear pair up. 6th gear and 10th gear are similar. 7th and 16th and so on...

Yes that's what I thought,duplicated.

I'd want a larger gear range if I lived in, say, swansea. My partner living halfway up a slope that I'm sure if it wasn't for ease of wheelchair access (I feel truely sorry for anyone with mobility issues living there) would have steps up the road.

I think I'd also want better brakes, and I'd likely buy myself a helmet, and use it.

I'd say the number of useable gears my bike has is 8 anyway, if we automatically exclude large large, small small combinations.
