Is Happy Valley the new Midsomer?
I thought that Oxford was the murder capital of the UK. How many series' of Morse were there?
No.

Far far grimmer/grittier than Midsomer. The murder of the police constable in the last episode had me squirming.

How much does it cost to Oldham?
It's the sheep bothering Capital of the North isn't it?

Thanks for the spoiler - I hadn't watched that episode yet!

You can find 'grim' anywhere if you look for it, and there is grim in HB, but I don't really encounter it. I used to see alcoholics knocking back their White Lightning in the park, which was a bit depressing. There also a few too many skunked-out teenagers, but that is probably true of most towns and cities these days.

I find it a nice place to live.

Apologies for the spoiler

I live in one of the poshest twee-est "best places to live in Britain"-est places in England and we have our fair share of town centre drunks, and skunked off their faces teens. (and a whole bunch of coked-up middle management types with anger management issues)

From the first two episodes it seems to be filmed in Todmorden, especially the accountant driving around on the phone in the first episode. The news agents at the very beginning was Basharat's here near Tod bus station. On the other hand the playground that seems round the corner is not in Todmorden. The teenager thinks it's in Elland. There are also locations in the moors above Ripponden where the kidnap took place, and around Sowerby Bridge, the tower blocks are possibly there or Boothtown in Halifax. They do mention places in the area.
The trailer for the third episode was another moment when I said 'oo, oo, I'm sure I know where that is, it's above Luddenden at the top of Halifax lane, I cycle round there, and it's in 100 best climbs, here look I've found it on streetview!' which for some reason fails to excite Mrs Svendo the way it does me!
Hebden Bridge does have its seedy side, like all places as ColinJ points out. HB's was documented in this film made by a returning Hebdenite.
