It isn't just Brits who get upset about such phrases. I remember an almost identical complaint from a Frenchie about the overuse of ''au niveau de.''

I don't have a problem when ''in terms of'' is used to narrow the field of discussion or when ''So...'' introduces a structured explanation of something. These seem to me to be legitimate uses. However, when the phrases become a substitute for thought, it can get a little exasperating....

Meanwhile, my step granddaughter has started beginning sentences with ''Well basically....'' As she's not quite 10, I'll indulge her for now.
