Disagree. Very useful tool when:-
  • You haven't got a clue how to answer the question and you're stalling for time while the brain slowly engages, or
  • You not sure whether the questionner know what the 'eff they're talking about and you want them to show their hand before you decide whether to dignify their question with an answer
.......should've been a politician:stop:

So a conjunction is the wrong type of word to start a sentence with.

And a preposition is the wrong type of word to end a sentence with.

Not so much a phrase, but the relentless invasion of the tendency for folk to say everything as if it were a question I find infuriating (upspeak I think it's called).
It's not just teenagers doing it, but folk who really should know better. For example, Environment Secretary, Liz Truss was on the radio this morning coming out with stuff like 'the government is investing billions in flood defences?' and 'the rainfall was unprecedented?' then something like 'we're working closely with partners on the ground?'. It just sounded as if she was answering questions with a load more questiosn- most odd!

What gets me is when people use billion for thousand million. A billion is a million million, always has been and always will be despite those colonials.

I've switched mostly to the short scale just so Americans are less confusing but I happily switch back to the long scale on the continent.

Will that do?

In terms of is now endemic.

There are certain organisations I deal with whose staff cannot utter a sentence without including it. All it does is make the speaker sound like an idiot. and if they stick 'going forward' on the end of a sentence it removes all doubt.
