It is, however if someone asks me i'm 100% open with them. The way I see it is I have worked hard to reach the level i'm at and I have also had the balls to knock on the door and negotiate my pay and fight my corner.. Go do likewise if you think you are underpaid / unfair that I earn more.

Dunno about disrespectful, but it's very un-British!

American cousins were warned (apparently) to avoid asking when they came over here, wheras back home it would have been no issue.

In my experience, especially working in a large organisation, it's bad news to find out what your peers are being paid.
You will be unhappy and end up leaving. I did.

I am totally open with my salary. Even to new junior members of my team. I feel that although their pay may not be great during their apprentice period, it can motivate them to work hard, and learn. As there is a clear reward for their effort as they progress.

Yes, it's no one else's business.

I have a friend who keeps finding out others earn more and it really upsets him. Not that he actually looks elsewhere for employment. Probably cos he earns about £100k working max 40 hours a week!

The thread title is tautologous (the sentence could stop after 'earn'). Move' in the workplace ' to after 'disrespectful'. Then it kinda works, and earns its own salary.
