I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of fellow cycle tourists I saw between Mulhouse and northern Provence on my recent north-south French trip; then they were suddenly everywhere, especially in the Camargue.
No shortage of roadies out, though, especially in the Jura and pre-alps; and I suppose there were probably other tourists who weren't recognisable as such because they were cheating and having their luggage transported for them...
