F***wits week is every week.

On Sunday, I am approaching a roundabout, v.busy road, at the 6pm exit, and going all the way round, to the 3pm turn off.
Into the lane, going round the 'bout, right arm extended, high vis jersey, red gloves...steady away...some FW bloke nearly drives into me at the 12 o'clock exit (ie straight on) and I just had to stop.
Asked him what he was doing (with my Elvis leg a quiver, cos I really thought I was going to get splatted) and he goes purple... 'how am I supposed to know where you're going?'

'Cos I've got my arm out!!!!' 'What does that mean?'

ehhhh???

Cycling, a pastime for people who like to think each day could be their last.....

I can see the appeal.

I am usually happy to sit back in the queue at lights....

I'm more likely to filter to the front if I see a cars sat in the box beyond the ASL..

I have been known to complement them on their bike as I go past

These days it seems to go in phases, will have nothing for a while then a few incidents in a very short space of time.
As with this week, it has been trouble free so far, almost 160km commuted in 3 days and nothing to worry about at all.

Two in two days...

First one yesterday - coming to a left hand turn off a pretty empty rural main road - indicated left as I was aware there was a car approaching from behind... then, as I turned left, the car overtakes me as I'm actually turning left round the corner (I was doing about 18mph at this point). I look in his rear view mirror (which was only about 8ft in front of me by now) suggesting that he might like to be a bit more observant of other road users. He put his brakes on ... looking like he was going to stop and argue the toss, but then just puts up two fingers and drives off. Total FW

Today's - very similar, except I was going straight past the junction - at about the same point, a white van overtakes, indicates left, then realises that he's going to completely take me out - so stops, overhanging the left turn, expecting me to undertake him to carry straight on. At least his actions suggest he realised in retrospect he'd been a FW. I let him turn left, then carried on.

In both cases, I was ready with the 'if I had been a car, would you have done that manoeuvre?', but didn't get the chance to use it. Shame.

Yesterday was ridiculous - the greatest number of close passes I've ever had in one ride, plus countless cars just pulling out of side streets while staring right at me (or rather through me). Then this morning I was waiting to turn right at a major junction and a car came up from behind, undertook and then tried to turn right with me

The strange thing is that while the driving seems aggressive, the response from the drivers hasn't been: no beeping or shouting whatsoever. In fact, by the end of yesterday's ride I was getting pretty post-watershed with my responses but not one of them said anything back.

I'm wondering if there's an Invasion of The Bodysnatchers type thing going on...

Seems like that to me to, 3 in 3now this week. Todays muppet was a WVM who was in the lane to my right (right turn only) and decided at the last minute he wanted to go straight on, no indication or anything, just came right into my lane at the side of me.
Got a good slap on his van door but he just drove on

saw a great incident on the way home yesterday. cyclist gets completely cut up by an oncoming driver turning right across him. driver stops, only to receive a few mouthfuls of harsh language shouted at an appropriate volume (imho, considering how dangerous his actions were). driver then tries to drive away (presumably with his tail between his legs) only to nearly mow down a whole gaggle of old turkish ladies who lay into him with as much gusto as the cyclist.

only thing better would have been if he'd been trotted out into the middle of a public square to be pelted with rotten veg.

gives you a nice warm feeling inside, dunnit!

It does seem worse than normal, I think it's mostly holiday mindset + heat. Less traffic, but that which is about isn't paying attention to anything.

It did seem to be "squash fimm day" today - one close pass at a pinch point, not requiring anything other than a bit of a mutter under my breath, and one moron towing a trailer at speed through a tighter pinchpoint, which had me on the brakes and heading for the side of the road - I've never felt the need to do that before.

They're the ones that scare me witless - you think you've survived a close pass, then you suddenly realise there's a trailer rattling past even closer.

Two I can think of:

1. I'm in the right hand lane, as I need to be for an approaching junction. Skip lorry comes past on left, with inches to spare, casuing me to blaspheme not a little, swerves into my lane. Followed by a car and a catering van, the latter not actually having room to complete the move before reaching the back of the queue, and ending up at a funny angle until the lights change again.

2. Chap in white car, so desperate to overtake, flies past, swerves in to the left, having to jam on brakes for red light ahead. Ends up past the first line, in the ASL, so far forward that he can't see the green filter arrow for ahead when it comes on on the traffic light pole to the left, and just sits there until the whole set go green, despite me hooting.

Hooting? Yes, both times, I was driving a bright yellow electric truck full of recycling.

<sigh>

Of course, the upside of the truck is that if I think someone's going to cut it fine overtaking before a pinchpoint (we do travel fairly slowly) I have few qualms about moving out a little to claim the lane, on account of the very robust square steel box around me.

I do enjoy it when they have to abort at the last moment.
