Probably a bit late now, but you might get away with it. If you really need to cut it back now to prevent it rambling even more, the worse that can happen is that it won't fruit.
Aaanyway, if you're in Cheddar, I'd say you were a bit late. You might have been ok if you were further north but I reckon you'll trash this year's crop if you have at it now.
We've pruned our trees in January for the past three years, missed doing them this year and will be waiting until January now, they're just starting to grow again...

There's a quite a few of last years windfalls I've got to pick up this weekend, can I just chuck them in the compost heap or will they ruin it if I chuck a few buckets on in one go?
