Is it really worth commuting in heavy rain?

Interesting ride in this morning also.... the howling side wind coming down from EK worried me a lot more than the rivers running across the roads though. I've never seen every drain bubble up like that before!

I hang my wet gear in a small cupboard next to a shower room, above a water tank (supplies hot water to the shower so the pipes produce a perfect drying temp). As I appear to be the only cyclist at the moment this works well however, If others asked, I'm sure I could rig something in the plant room on a more permanent basis (server rooms are a no no). Easy for me as I work in Facilities.... they're the people to speak to about getting something set up for you. Bribe them with doughnuts!!!

Had a planned day off with good lady yesterday and thank goodness. You done well out in that yesterday Doddy !!! Weather was wild all night. Was up the back roads at Auldhouse and Eaglesham dropping the daughter off at her horse yard job. Total nightmare in car the amount of water that was lying. Back to work today and back on bike and weather actually pretty mild up in EK. Bit like yourself i'm lucky to have a wee changing room next to a boiler in the factory and an old clothes rail for hanging spare clothes on
Whats your commute Doddy. I'm Westwod to Cathcart. Head out around 6.45 am and back up the way about 17.15.
Maybe seen you out and about

Aye it was fine this morning Stevie... a lot of silt and grit on the roads but at least it was dry...ish.

My commute's St.Leonards to Queen Street via the Cathkin bypass. Same direction but opposite side of the brae to you.

Maybe see you about some time Doddy. Sometimes cut over the Brae in the summer mornings and then over Kings Park Ave to add a few more miles.
Nice uphill journey home for you an all then lol, Struggle tonight with the headwind and after a working late shift.

To get back to original subject i'm going to try and keep the commuting going all thro' winter in all weathers (where possible) Really enjoying cycling again and to be honest the rain and wind havent put me off at all. (yet )

Luckily, days of proper torrential rain like yesterday aren't too common right now though they do come in phases. The last two summers have been particularly bad with whole weeks passing without a single day where I don't get soaked at least one end of the day. I often see advocates of cycling quoting statistics on number of days of rain per year, indicating that the number of commutes during a year when it would be an issue are actually very few. I always wonder where they live because it certainly isn't Glasgow!
Last "summer" I got soaked so many times the statistics should go up!
Maybe it only counts if you're commuting and soaking - what if you get wet riding to the shops?

I got a fungal infection somewhere unmentionable this summer - I'm certain it was due to the amount of soakings I got!

It does build character getting changed in a toilet loo. Did it a few weeks ago, into damp kit on a site, restrictive was a word I would use.
We've got a huge disabled access loo in my department - also has one of those wall mounted baby canging tables for me to spread all my bags etc on!

Main problem for me is my commute is about 5miles, <20mins. Spending 6-10mins changing from full cycle gear in to dry clothes and then packing the wet cycle gear in to a bag makes the whole commute not very time efficient. I'm at uni so can't really leave it anywhere....

What about waterproof jacket and trousers over normal clothes? You could let the jacket drip dry normally like others do with their jackets in wet weather, and you could put the trousers on a chair back. The lot should be dry within a lecture.
