I met somebody recently who said that not carrying a mobile was selfish because other people had to go to greater trouble if they wanted to contact you. I thought he was completely daft. What do you think?

Thank you.

I gave mine up for 5 years with no hassle, people would be able to contact me when I wanted.
The only reason I have one now is for emergencies whilst out on the bike

It's the prats who carry a mobile everywhere and never switch it off who are selfish. Go to the cinema or theatre, get down to play a shot in a snooker hall or try and enjoy a quiet meal out and the whole experience is ruined by ring tones and text alerts, not to mention the users infantile conversation carried on at eighty decibels.

Only in certain circumstances. My Mum likes to be able to get hold of me, and worries if she can't. This I don't mind, she's a Mum, and generally only calls my mobile if she's rung home and expected me to be there, or has a pressing question.

But if my work were pestering me, I would mind.

Mind you, my Mum only ever has her mobile on in order to make a call, so I haven't a hope of getting her unless she's at home! I have pointed out the irony of this, but she seems to think she's wasting it somehow.

I have my phone with me all the time, however I do hate it when people ring me whilst I am out because it means I have to stop and answer it. I think I will just keep it off from now on.

I arrived at the office of a campsite in Germany at a reasonable time of day last summer but there was no one there, just a notice saying to phone a number and not the usual instruction to knock on the door of the third house along the road or whatever. I looked in vain for a telephone to phone from until eventually a lady came along, assured me that was the way this campsite operated and phoned the number on my behalf. When the site owner arrived I informed him of the long delay I had experienced in getting in touch with him and that if it were not for the kind lady he would have lost a customer that night. He remained unconvinced that his system was not a good one, even when filling in my details on the register he twice asked me for my mobile phone number and found it quite incredible that I had no mobile. He asked what I would do in an emergency, I explained that I was far from home and knew no one in Germany who I could phone anyway, but he still didn't get it!

That is the typical modern attitude towards things.

If you dont have a phone, you are weird. If you dont have a TV, you are weird. If you dont have a computer, you are weird.
You always have to have something in order to not be weird. People nowadays dont understand the concept of 'naturallity'.

My phone is mostly switched off, I don't want people calling me when I'm doing something. Further, I never put down my mobile number when filling in forms. If businesses need to contact me they can have my landline number and leave a message, or I give an e-mail address that I reserve only for business, and change regularly.

I don't think it's selfish; just a bit daft. Is there any reason not to carry around a mobile phone?

Yep. Completely daft.

15 years ago if someone was out, that was it... they were out. Come back later.

15 years ago not many people had internet. Some people would say 'turn off your computer, go read a book. That's what we did in my day"

That's you that is. :hello:
