I He was dark skin coloured (politically correct?)

That made me laugh.

Only have my phone if out on the bike or walking the dogs - just in case I get in any bother. I haven't been bothered charging my work's mobile for ages. If someone wants me - they can contact me in work hours and on the landline.

I carry a mobile phone with me on the bike and it's switched off, if they want me, they'll have to wait until I return from my uninterrupted cycle ride ... I know I'm a selfish fecker!! :thanks:

The screen on my iPhone is knackered so it's out of action at the moment. I've ordered a replacement part but I've been without use of a mobile phone since Monday. It's been a liberating experience.

There have been a couple of times when it would have been useful - eg to let my wife know that my train was delayed on Monday evening - but apart from that, I've not missed it at all.

My many hundreds of devoted followers on Twitter must be wondering what has become of me though.

I give people the number of a phone that I carry on forum rides but it is the only time I'll answer it! If anybody wants to contact me any other time they can email me or PM me here and I'll reply at my leisure!

I very rarely carry a phone when riding solo. If something bad happens, I'll cope with it, or not, just like people always did before mobile phones came along.

It pees me off when people start taking lengthy calls during rides. One mate got 3 or 4 calls during the 5.5 mile Cragg Vale climb with me. His girlfriend was in a supermarket and was asking him if he fancied mackerel? 5 minutes later - special offer on red wine. Ooh, must make another call - what do you fancy for tomorrow night ...? I told him to tell her that he was busy and get on with the ride or I'd leave him and go on alone - flipping heck!

Mine is switched off probably 80% of the time. I seem to be the only person at work who is not more or less constantly fiddling with one in the break times. One bloke in particular strides up and down, talking utter bollocks...

A mate of mine can get quite grumpy when he texts people, and they don't answer within an hour or two. I have pointed out that they're not at his beck and call, and like me, not even get the message for some days if the feckin' thing is turned off...

Oh, and I generally refuse to send text messages. Irritating things. Early telecommunications involved sending Morse code down the phone line, then some bright spark worked out a way to talk over them. It was called progress. Text messages are little better than sending Morse code and are a backward step imo.

I wholly disagree. Text vs voice is asynchronous vs synchronous communication. They have different purposes, different pros and cons, but both are useful in their own way.

What I don't get is when my son spends ages texting to and fro with his mates when it would be quicker and easier to speak to them. Kids, eh?

I met somebody recently who said that not carrying a mobile was selfish because other people had to go to greater trouble if they wanted to contact you. I thought he was completely daft. What do you think?

Thank you.

Surely this is dependant upon circumstances. If they are a surgeon, then yes it it totally selfish, if they are a vicar, then maybe not so much.

Phoning somebody is intrusive and demanding; texting someobody and waiting for a reply is polite and patient!

I have given my phone number out to over 100 CC members but I don't want them phoning me up whenever they feel like it - I have a life to get on with that doesn't revolve around jumping every time they call!

If I'm riding my bike and someone calls, I have to stop and answer it. I might be in heavy traffic or halfway up a steep climb. Text me, I'll get back to you when it suits me!

Personally, I think we've got it so good in the western world... this is what people stoop to to have a moan about something.
