I believe that one of the reasons it was filmed in NZ is they have some very good CGI companies, which are presumably cheaper than their counterparts in the US or UK.

The scenery was obviously an important factor as well.
 
Could be something to do with the director, Peter Jackson, being a native and being insistent that he wouldn't work anywhere he couldn't commute to on his bicycle.

The first bit, definitely. Most of Wellington (NZ) got work on something or other to do with the film. I think I made that up.

Sad claim to fame... I was at school with Peter Jackson and made Super 8 movies. One of which was featured on the NZ equivalent of Blue Peter and was 'highly commended'. Should have won in my opinion but that'd just be sour grapes.
