Is it worth the risk, I ask myself..

Whey I'm from a village near to rugby. Do you live in the town itself? It was fairly mild today so ice and snow were melting rapidly so the canal would be a no go!

i live in the Brownsover area of Rugby (but not the part where you get shot at !!!). i commute to Daventry a couple of days a week, up through Barby. i use the old great central railway line if the conditions are right.

roads were starting to slush up today, the worst bit i found was like this....

and no, i wasn't tempted to ride on the canal ;)

There's a video on the BBC website, showing people swimming in the Serpentine on Friday morning after they'd broken the ice:

Based on my limited experience of outdoor swimming, the idea is that they start doing it in the summer, then keep going for the rest of the year so that they gradually acclimatise to the colder water. If you'd be quite happy to do that, and you don't mind losing your bike if it sinks, then go ahead and cycle across the lake. If you wouldn't want to wind up in the water, best to stay on solid ground.

On the channel four daredevils series there was that dutch guy who went dipping in canals every night to get a tolerance to low temperatures. He was able to do an arctic circle marathon!
