Who was the last rider to do that?

Let's narrow it down to avoid people mentioning Thibaut or the beautiful Marcel: who was the last grand tour or monument winner to retire without losing one or suffering a serious injury?

To save you looking it up, Simon Yates finished 15th in his final grand tour.

I suppose technically you could say Armstrong. Hinault came 2nd in his last Tour, which isn't exactly bad. With the outright record within reach for both Tours and monuments, you'd think Pogacar will carry on for another few years yet. The next two Worlds are also hilly so you'd think would be within his reach. That would also give him the most World titles.

I was going to go with Chris Horner but he blotted his copy book by riding the Tour the following year.

Heras won his final GT in 2005 (won 2 of his last 3). Whether that is the last person to do it I don't know.

Edit - I'm going Roberto Heras, final answer.

I'd go with Mosquera: final result was 2nd in the 2010 Vuelta a Burgos to Samuel Sanchez, who was eventually busted, ahead of Nibali, Scarponi, and Landa.

I hate to do this ... but did he actually retire?

(If he officially retired before his suspension, you are probably ok! ;P )

Let's remember that the suspension was overturned on appeal. Eventually. The last court case about it finished in 2017.

Even if he didn't formally retire, he never raced another Grand Tour or monument after his win. He did do the Brompton Worlds. And he won that.
