Looks good Potsy, 900 squid for your 'first' mtn bike! Don't you worry about buying a 26" one just as the rest of us are going 29, I wouldn't let something like that niggle away at the back of my mind....

I do like the Boardman's though and that one 400bhp linked to is a great price.

Doesn't seem to be any left in the local stores around here, does look good though.
Will go and have a look at some tomorrow, maybe even the slightly lower spec Decathlon 8.1, only £550 with a 1.3kg weight difference.

Weight tends to be the main penalty with a cheaper mountain bike - equipment spec is still pretty good.

A kilo and a bit might mean a lot on a roadie, but will not make so much difference on an MTB which is not built for speed.

The cheaper Decathlon looks excellent value and it hardly seems worth paying the extra few hundred for the dearer one.

I would agree gvfm. The fork is a decent enough one, perfectly adequate for trails and the rest of the spec is fine. You will get the odd snob who wouldn't ride it because it says Rockrider on it, but that is their loss.

The 8.1 is in stock at Stockport so will go for a look at it

I think with me being a bit of a weight weenie I quite fancy waiting for the 8.3, according to the size guide I should fit a medium, will have a think after I've seen the heavier 8.1

Hold out for the 8.3 if you can @potsy that fork and frame are excellent value. There's over a kilo difference in the fork and frame alone. Weight may not be everything, but it saves having to force yourself to,lighten yourself through bodily functions....

That's my thinking at the minute Cubist, would be forever thinking 'what if' if I go for the cheaper one out of convenience
