I really want to cycle into work tomorrow, but am away down to our head office on Wednesday so need to bring home laptop and about a ton of paperwork tomorrow evening as flying silly oclock on Wednesday morning.

I am sitting here thinking that I could cycle to and from work tomorrow and then drive back in during the evening and get laptop etc!!

Not a bad idea, boyfriend has something on tomorrow afternoon and is not likely to be back for my normal finishing time but given how much work I fear I need to do tomorrow could work a bit later and do some begging for him to come home "via" the office.

Yes I do have panniers but am not willing to risk taking my laptop in there as I would have to replace it if I came off and it got broken. Also when I say a ton of paperwork I do mean a ton..

I've never taken a laptop in panniers because I'm sure the vibration wouldn't do it any good for one thing. I've carried one in a rucksack, which seemed a lot better.

why dont you send all the paperwork home via cycle courier service at the companies expense? hahaha

My brother-in-law bought me a pannier-laptop-bag for Xmas. It's a bikehut one, but that doesn't bother me. I've yet to try it - mostly I leave the laptop in the office if I don't need it - but I'm in the fortunate position that if it does vibrate to death, I don't have to pay for a replacement laptop myself  I was moaning a lot late last year about having to be in the car because of having to drag my laptop back and forth because of work I needed to do...

the only way a laptop could be harmed from vibrations in a pannier would be if the hard drive was operating which it wouldnt if the lid was closed and it was in sleep mode or if it was off. The Hard drive heads get parked and no amount of shaking will free them. Obviously a massive knock could damage it but that kind of bash would probably damage the case or screen first.
You are just as likely to crash in your car as you are on your bike (someone will come along in a minute to tell me otherwise) so could get bashed either way.
If the laptop got damaged internally with no obvious signs of a bash you could put it down to faulty components anyway and get the IT dept. to fix it.

can't you scan it all and email it to yourself?
gives you a chance to stand looking busy while not actually do much work while you feed it all into the scanner.

Probably a bit late for this nugget of info, but I've been cycling 7 miles each way to work and back, with a standard Dell laptop in a pannier for years, and never had any trouble.

I use a Vaude laptop bag inside a regular pannier, leaving loads of room for papers, books, lunchboxes, clothes, binoculars, cameras and all the rest of it in that pannier and the other one.

Occasionally I check over the little screws holding the laptop case together and tighten them up a little, and that's all.
