Is this cycle lane in Slough as badly designed as it looks

It doesn't look much different from a normal 2-way street with cars parked on one side, except that only bikes can use one side of the road. There's should be enough room to avoid the door zone. Unsighted drivers may poke their nose out into the bike lane when starting off though. But that's a hazard on normal roads where people are parked on the opposite side.

It is a one way street with contra-flow cycle lane. Further along, the parking bays are on the car side of the road.

and you've got the silly bit where Hillside joins from the east. The planners have cleverly decided to direct cyclists towards the mouth of the junction. This could lead to confusion as drivers from Hillside may see people heading towards them and assume that they are turning. Common sense would dictate that primary is the position to take when approaching and passing a side road, giving better lines of sight and making it bl00dy obvious that you're not turning. Ho hum........cycle facilities designed by non cyclists...got to love 'em...or not.

and at the south end you've got a nice bit of angled kerb and some tactile paving. Bet that's interesting in the wet. I wonder what sort of mouthbreather dreamed this one up?

I've used that one several times with the Slough posse. It's not that bad, better than the 2 mile detour available to you if you want to use the road.

If you don't feel safe, you slow down a bit, at least someone thought about cyclists for long enough to put it there, there had been a lot of changes to the road layout since the previous time I was in Chalvey.

As Norm says. Used a few times. No issues thus far

I don't like contra flows but at least that one is marked and looks to allow some distance from the door zone for the savvy cyclist.

There is a worse one near me which has an unusual road sign and that's it, with one car width-and-a-bit for the whole road system. And very unclearly marked leading to drivers pulling across to block the path to "teach the dangerous cyclist a lesson on one way streets"

I don't use it. Which is a shame because in theory contra flow is very valid, cycles can go safely where cars cannot and for road networks to deny that is preposterous. And the more CF systems there are, the more accustomed drivers will be to them.

Not had an issue with it and used it a couple of times, vehicles are not speeding through there. The road narrows slightly where the entrance and exit to the road are and this causes motorists to be more hesitant.

My main issue with the one here, and same would go for the Slough one, is that the cycle lane is entirely in the door zone of the parking spaces. A secondary issue is that car's drivers leaving the parking spaces don't register that they're crossing a cycle lane. Why can't the parking spaces be on the other side of the road?

The Slough one is wide enough that you're a fair way out, though not completely free of the door zone. However, as it is contraflow, you are looking at the faces of anyone opening a passenger door of a car.

As for parking on the opposite side, I'm sure some would park across the bike lane whereas that lane would require them to double park, and there is a bit further up the road which has the bike lane and parking on opposite sides.
