Panniers FTW.

If you request two laptops because you don't want to transport a laptop to/from the office then expect a lot of eye-rolling from your employer. Portability is the whole point of laptops.

I used to commute about 18-19 miles by bike with my laptop in a rucksack but moved to panniers when I got a new bike that could take them. I couldn't get on with them to be honest and went back to the rucksack. The cycling commute is less of an issue but my intention is to rotate bike and run (around 5-6 miles) which is more of an issue with a 2kg plus laptop in the rucksack. That said, I will hopefully drop more than 2kg off my gut when I start doing that regularly!

Another concern your employer might have (if they are security conscious) that I didn't see noted above (may have missed it) is that they have no control over who else might on occasions have access to your personal laptop eg partner, children maybe a friend visiting who wants to show you some amazing video ...

Also, if your new company is not security conscious that that would be a concern as it isn't always the case that hackers decide to target a selected company. My own personal website is under continual attack from BOTs from all over the world (incl. the US), sometimes from reputable providers of servers.
