I'm definitely starting to think of getting a new (although not necessarily "new" new) commute bike. My steel road bike hack is OK but the geometry doesn't quite suit me, the bars are a bit low unless I have loads of (quill) stem showing. It's heavy too, although that's not such a big deal. It was cheap- except the wheels, which I'll keep anyway since my dynohub is built into the front one.
Time to start looking around for either a complete bike or frame that'd make a nice commuter. For new stuff the LBS doesn't really have much that's sutiable (Spesh Tricross is probably the only thing that'll do it, if I can get some guards to fit) but I'll go in and have a word and see what they might be able to get.
It's a nice itch to get though.
I've also been holding out for Cyclescheme only the company isn't going to adopt it.
"..due to the current economic situation and the cost reduction projects that have been in place since last year, ****** will not be adopting this scheme in the short term future. This is due to the additional cost that ****** would incur on payroll administration..".
There follows some stuff about payroll schemes and software programming module costs.
It seems unlikely that the costs would be significant. They also point out that another company we have now merged with used to run the scheme and take-up was low (two people). More badgering required, but I'm going to assume that I'm not up for a cheaper bike in the near future.
Just when I was thinking about this I recieved an email about parking.
"..If anyone is not going to be in the office tomorrow and can free up their parking space it would be very helpful, as we have a few meetings going on and not enough parking spaces. This is still happening quite often.."
Might be a way in there.
