It's already icy... and this just makes it worse!

Today, I had the misfortune to be on the same route as the refuse lorry and the 'wash out your wheelie bin' service that follows behind it. Twice I nearly fell over. The road was criss-crossed with sheets of ice! What I guess had happened is the bin-washer had left pools and trails of water a foot or more wide all over the length of the road - crossing back and forth from one side to the other as the van went to people who had paid to have their bins washed - and all the spray had then promptly frozen on the road surface.

Every repect for the refuse people doing collections in this lousy weather. But the optional bin-washing service really shouldn't be making the roads worse in this weather!

I agree. Ping your council folks and explain that the insurance claims could be very large.

I have not had my bin collected for 4 weeks, despite the road being passable....I have phoned and sent e-mails and been promised it would been emptied but nothing. Might take it along to their head office tomorrow rather than the recycling centre.

Had the same thought. They must already be aware this is happening though?

I dunno. There's a service like that round near where I work, and I've seen them going round some time after the bin lorry, so the bin men may have no idea it's happening.

I think it's a stupid idea anyway (it's a bin! for gods sake, it doesn't need washing), but to do it in this weather... madness.

It's unlikely that it's a council run service so it's likely to be a wasted phone call. The bin washers are out because their livelihood depends upon washing out the bins. They ought to be covered by their own public liability insurance.

Yes, it is a living for some and bins do get a bit pongy, a problem if you haven't much space for them. (We did subscribe once and yes, it is a private enterprise round here.) As for public liability insurance, I wouldn't bet on it!

I wash my own bin, when the weather is warm enough to make it smell too much.

The bin washers would be liable for discharging water onto the highway and causing a danger to road users.

Though any claim would be mitigated by the fact you chose to take a bike out in icy weather.

And if an old dear falls over on the ice her claim would be mitigated because she's old
