what poisons are you using ? some can be very harmful to birds. And birds will eat ants that have died after poisonig and then suffer the same fate themselves, you won't see the birds you are poisoning as it takes a while to kill them.
We use ant and crawling insect killer from Wilko. Looking on the container it contains Permethrin

I noticed a few in the back yard this afternoon, but thankfully none (yet) in my kitchen. I put tons* of ant powder down the cracks they tend to emerge from a couple of months ago so hopefully that'll halt this year's invasion. (maybe subsequent years too, how long does it last?).

When i lived around the corner they used to hatch from the gatepost and scare the local kids. I used to 'treat' them** with a kettle full of boiling water.

*grams.
**the ants.

My funniest (and only) Flying Ant story is when MrsPete and I got back from a fortnights holiday in late July.
She opened a little used back door and hundreds of flying ants dropped on her head from the nest that had formed in the door frame.

Apparently, me bursting out laughing was deemed to be 'inappropriate'
