Happily around here it has never taken off. Perhaps it is just my road that is lucky?

Don't blame the night, blame the parents - we used to have Halloween parties when the kids were younger and we'd take them trick or treating, but only to neighbours, generally okayed in advance. But we're not bothered by casual callers, my understanding of the unwritten code is that if a house displays Halloween decoration then it's ok to knock, so we have lanterns etc and keep a big tub of sweets by the door. Generally 8pm is the limit but we accept callers up to 9pm, I have given the bums rush to the odd teenager(they're all odd in some way  ) and we never give out money.

It's not as much fun as it used to be, the kids are older now so the 'inhouse' excitement level isn't there anymore and we don't dress up now either - yes I was always Frankenstein or a Zombie and yes little makeup required  But my sons do the door answering now and you can see that they actually get a bit of a buzz out of giving sweets to the little kids and admiring, and feigning fear at, the costumes.

But each to their own, if this thread was about carol singing then my view would be markedly different.

There seems to be a lot more dressing up this year, perhaps because the supermarkets have gone all out so pester power has succeeded.

Only one knock on our door which I didn't answer, most know we don't do it by now. As MacB said it seems to be working that if you put up a decoration then it's a sign you're open for business, otherwise you seem to be left alone round here.

my brother and sister-in law had a parent call round last night with some sweets to hand out to his kids when they come round!

quite thoughtful really given that you don't know what everyone's financial situation is these days.

my wife stocked up on multi pack chocolate buttons and the conversation went as follows:

"what are they for"

"it's halloween, we need chocolate"

"In a 2nd floor flat, behind an intercom entry buzzer and big gates?"

"exactly, more for us"

I remember why I love her

having said that, if any children from the neighbouring flats were to come, I'd give them a packet even though I don't do halloween.

my dad just tells them that it's too early for christmas carols and closes the door.

I live in a small village and halloween visiting seems to get busier and busier each year. The last couple of years I did get sweets in and left my lights on so people knew they were welcome. This year I am feeling a bit bah humbug about it so went out shopping between 6 & 7pm an left lights off at the front when I got in. When I drove back from the supermarket the streets were crawling with all ages of children but as yet no one had rung my bell. Yeah! Did think of putting scary mask & witches hat on if anyone did ring!

I cycled home through Forest Hill tonite. The pavements were crowded with little kids dressed up in their halloween gear and shrieking with delight at the fun they were having. It's just fun for them at that age. And I love to see them enjoying themselves like that. Some people are just so humbug if youll pardon me mixing my metadatas

The bloody thing had to fall on a Monday, my busiest day. loads of people wouldn't answer the door after 5 0'clock and I'm stuck with undelivered goods which is a bit of a sod as it's cash on delivery and I still have to pay for them, so that's either suffer a bad week or work a day off to get rid of them.

Didn't help to get home and have Mrs SJ point to the remains of an egg on the porch window which is nothing more than mindless vandalism and very frightening to any old people living alone.

We've had about 8 to 10 calls tonight with about four or five children all dressed up per calling, we are almost out of sweets, but I do have reserves should they be needed.

We love to see the kids all dressed up and whats even better is the nice polite "Thank you" each child gives, it's so worth it IMHO

Most of you lot are just tight fisted gits
