Saw plenty of kids of various ages on the way to work at 7 pm last night , i cant say i agree with it and i am lucky enough to live down a private drive with no street lights so we had no callers

Miss Canrider dressed up in the witches outfit her Canadian Nana brought over and 'helped' answer the door. We had maybe two dozen callers aged from 18 months up to 15 years. All said thank you and the bigger ones helped gee up the littlest ones to be brave enough to knock on the door themselves and (Crom forbid) interact with a stranger, rather than running scared of them, for which they were rewarded with a wrapped sweet.

before we had kids of the age to enjoy halloween, it was a case of lights off and telly quiet.
these days, the kids love the whole thing and, despite my own misgivings about imported 'tradition', we allow them to trick or treat with the understanding that they only knock on doors of houses with some sort of halloween decoration. it seems to be the way it works around here. we, of course, reciprocate and it's far less annoying and more fun than you would think. most of the kids are accompanied by a parent or, in the case of ours, in a group containing two teens.

This year I dug up a few dead bodies from the local cemetary to hang in nooses round the front door (just to make it a bit more authentic, like), and I gave out sweets with strychnine in them! Oh, how I laughed as the children convulsed on the floor, writhing in agony and foaming at the mouth while I, dressed as the guy from texas chainsaw massacre (complete with hockey mask), dragged them into the garage and sparked up the faithful old tree cutter. I gotta have me some corpses for next year, you see ...

Errr ... not quite! Go to places like India and Thailand. Then you'll see proper begging! People who live under a motorway bridge because they can't afford even to buy a plot of land and put up a corrugated iron roof on four poles. People who literally work up to their chests in human excrement as sewer cleaners, for the equivalent of about £2 per day. People who walk around barefoot and filthy dirty wearing nothing but a loincloth black with filth because they can't afford clothes.
And IME of working with those in this country who live on council estates is that by and large they just get on with life. And many of them do work.

October 31st is the only time that I allow my dog to help answer the door. Not that many kids walk from the path to my front door as it is about 50 yards and even though she is fifteen they wouldn't be able to out run the dog ( not that she would do anything as by 50yards she'd be too worn out) .
