Since I have bought a new bike and started commuting by bike during 2010 I intend to zero the milometer on my cycle computer and see just how many miles I ride in 2011.

Is there anything else I should be doing at this time of year as a cyclist?

Oh, Happy New Year.

Oh yes indeed. Make sure your bike is well sorted mechanically for all the stresses and miles you will be piling on from tomorrow.

Oh - and go to bed early tonight as you'll be out first thing getting the miles in

BTW - rollers and home trainers don't count. So make sure the computer sensor is on the front wheel

Me - I've done a schedule using an Excel spread sheet  . So if my computer stops working..............

start logging your rides on a spread sheet.

date, distance, time taken, average speed, max speed and total distance etc.

its very easy to link the data to some simple graphs and charts and work out average per month etc. much better than simply zeroing your computer

I do have a little plan for tomorrow  and I don't do training or rollers, I just like riding my bike!

I'm not really taking it that seriously but if I do more than 1k in the next 12 months that will be a huge improvement on the last 10 years average
I might do some kind of Excel log then at least I can add in any MTB rides I do as the MTB is now computerless, just a simple date, destination and distance will suffice.

One advantage of keeping a spreadsheet record is that when the computer jumps off the handlebars and lands under the wheels of the artic 2 yards behind you, you still know what you've been up to over the past year. I learned this at 6:45 on Monday morning at Nine Elms just before Christmas. The replacement tells me I've done 83 miles but I know it's 3093 miles and at a faster average speed.

Looks like I might be ordering a replacement tomorrow, I'll have to have another look at it.

Happy New Year Skol,

I don't zero my computer as I log miles so I can tell how far I've went at any point; the computer for me records the total life of the bike.

Happy new year!

Hoprfully I will be at the Snake Pass summit in less than 12hrs time (hic) but that may just be a pipe dream?

Today I made it up the Snake Pass from Ashton-under-Lyne for probably the first time in over 10 years. I would have done it on new years day but was strangely struck down with some kind of illness after a new years eve party

It wasn't too bad at all, a distance of just over 11 miles to the summit and all done without a single stop. It was bl**dy cold at the top so a quick picture and a text message home then it was coat on and back down into Glossop. I actually had to brake to slow down on the descent to stop my face from freezing, I'll wait till summer before I return.

So that is the first 22 miles of 2011 under my belt and I hope to commute twice this week which will be another 40 miles and a very healthy start to the years total.

My target for the year is at least a 1000 miles and to reduce my weight from 204lbs to around 190lbs. Wish me luck!
