Well the fallout from my Evans Cycles 'service' continued when my back brake locked up - so I ended up an hour late for work on Cycle to work day

all these 'get people on bikes' initiatives will never work until the mindset of car drivers are changed as to how they act around cyclists. The most often heard response to me when I say I cycle to work is 'Isn't it dangerous? I wouldn't cycle to work'. This of course is usually uttered by a car driver.

Not helped for me this morning by almost being taken out in the cycle lane by someone deciding to 'just go for that gap down the left to get out of this traffic' in their Mercedes SUV on Trafalgar Rd. I mean, they waved sorry so that was all alright then.

Isn't it just a scam to get air time on TV and radio anyway?

Three or four years ago (before I was cycling) we used to have free bacon butties for the cyclists and bike checks/marking. Then it dropped to a coffee and for the last couple of years it's not even been publicised here. If I wasn't signed up for information direct from cycle to work I wouldn't have had a clue it was going on today until opening CC.

The local radio phone-in show had a piece on it today. You know it's going to go well when the presenter starts with 'I'm all for cycling but...' I didn't hear a 'Some of my best friends are cyclists' so just missed out on a full house.

Here's some of the gems:

Caller: Tax cyclists like you'd tax a dog. I pay £5 a year for my dog license, why shouldn't cyclists be the same?

Host: Why do cyclists insist on going so fast and not using cycle lanes?
Sus Trans Guy: A lot of the cycle lanes are in bad condition with pot holes or signs/obstacles placed in them. The average speed in Belfast is below 20mph. Cyclists can do 10-15mph so there isn't as big a discrepancy in speed as people think.
Host: Well they should just go slower and ride round the potholes, they're not in The Giro.

Host: The majority of people who are late for work have been held up by cyclists.

Host: I know there's no such thing as road tax but I pay a lot of money to put my car on the road and cyclists pay nothing.

The funny thing was in the ads between segments there was one for McConvey Cycles in town. If I were them I'd be re-assessing my media spend.

For once I'm in the car; needed to bring in compost  plus a load of books and I have to collect a wheel later plus some pedals for the 10yo.

Back to the usual 5 days-a-week commute by bike tomorrow.

Schools in wales have been back in since monday/tuesday, we also got nato summit to deal with, cant always please everybody
Yeah you can. This week will be crazy for most parents. Pick a day a couple of weeks in. Disruption then will be insignificant in numbers by comparison.

So what these people want are cyclists off the road. Yeah that will work won't it. Get cyclists back in their cars and cause even more congestion. Can't these thick winkers get it in their head that the more cyclists on the road the less cars there are and the better the traffic flow. Bunch of knobs.

Every day is cycle to work day for me. Well, except the weekends of course. And holidays.

I saw my usual one other cycle commuter this morning.

What's the problem with the brake?

According to the very nice people at the LBS I popped into, after releasing the cable and using one brake, someone had put the left calliper of the back brake on a higher tension spring than the right which caused it to slam the pad into the rim and lock.

Very nice people (who don't want to be named as they know the Evans shower and don't want a war) spent 10 minutes rebuilding my brake.

At least I missed the rush hour.
