If you miss the small-town ambience, why not move to somewhere similar in the UK? There are still some market towns that have not fallen to the supermarket hegemony.

Tried that. Called every state school in the south village sort of area (Cranbrook) every school was full but one, which had THE most awful results. So Hi HO it's off to public school we go. Am not chuffed about it. Just another trapping of the SE.

My husband has moved us back to the UK. Just went to Sainsburys and it was horrid and big and busy. I miss my little mountain coop, with the cashier whose gender confused me for some time, which is closed on a Sunday, and the town is quiet...
