Woops, I put 'never' but realised it's actually 'once'. On a audax, Amersham (Bucks) way. There's a shared cycle path on a residential footpath, so lots of ups and downs over peoples driveways, side roads etc. I was on the road doing my usual 22kph-ish average I guess. Some guy got arsey because he had to slow down to allow oncoming traffic past before he could overtake me. Held him up for all of a few seconds. Diddums.

I put weekly but averaged out it's probably twice a month. Evan had some twat in an open top car shouting and swearing at me whilst I was doing a ten on a quiet B road in the evening, I 'suggested' he pull into the next layby, which he did but then wheel spun away spraying me with gravel just as I came up to him. Mrs D started a minute behind me and he passed her very close shouting as well. It was probably just as well I didn't get hold of him as I would have ripped his f*cking head off!

I voted never but the major path in the area is used as a long thin overnight lorry park surrounded by an ocean of windscreen glass..........

Thinking about it, there are two or three stretches where this is really common.

One is Milton road, with an off-road shared use path along much of it, or the 'pedestrian slalom' as I like to call it. I can't be doing with giving way to each side road and having to stop sharply for each drive where someone pulls out.

Another is Gilbert road, which has worse than useless cycle lanes that have cars parked in them, so you can either be constantly pulling out into the traffic or just stay IN the traffic, which is safer.

And the third is Chesterton Lane, where a new (couple of years old) traffic island has cycle paths down the outside of the road on either side, thus meaning that the point at which the road narrows and you really should take primary position if you hadn't already, you're being encouraged to be in the gutter, and motorists are encouraged to think that at this location you SHOULD do this; often a car will accelerate behind me assuming that I must be about to move over for the cycle lane.

So, yes, on reflection, at least once a month here, or closer to once a fortnight.

I was once told I should not be on the road "on that thing", at least I think that was what he said as I pay scant attention to what comes out of the mouth of cagers.

About the same amount of motorists that get a friendly wave from me along with a "f'king twat!" shouted at them ;)

I never had it in Birmingham, but do every now and again here.

I've been told a few times - not whilst riding, but by other people when talking about cycling.

Actually I forgot that I was sent on a First Aid Course, with another cycling colleage, and whilst waiting for the course to begin. Some of the other people attending the course started to discuss why cyclists didn't use the path when there was one provided. A slightly heated discussion between us and them, started about did they want to stop at every driveway, side road etc and check whether it was safe before continuing in their car:angry:.

Never for me

(though once, 2 fat lady peds totally blocking a bike path shouted "ah diddums is the road too scary for you" one of those times I was so gobsmacked I didn't manage to say anything in response!)

I suggest "aw, diddums, is the pedestrian pavement too narrow for you?";)

With regard to myself and the OP, I think a handful of times covers it, I can't remember really. I'm sure at least once, it was when there wasn't a cyclepath to get on to. I certainly have been told at least once that I ought to get over to the left out of the way when a driver wants to come by on a narrow road (thus putting me firmly in the doorzone of a line of parked cars).

I was in the rh side of the rh lane at a set of tls, and a woman driver rather frostily asked why I wasn't in the cycle lane, so I pointed out rather warmly that I was about to make a right turn a few yards past the tls. The woman looked a little abashed.

Never been told to. Have already been on the path if bimbling along. If I was going for it on a training session then the road is where I ride, common sense has prevailed and people see I am moving too fast for the path.
