Does it feel like it fits?

Sounds on the small size but really depends on the geometry, I think boardman size small, medium, large? So a medium would typically be a 54-55cm? How did it feel to sit on etc, as unfortunately halfords don't allow test rides typically

:welcome: to CC. Sorry to hear your new bike experience is being blighted with these doubts.

No-one can advise you without at least some pics of you on the bike, (side view).

THIS site is worth a read for initial fitting, it may help you decide if it's right or not.

However, having checked on Halfords website, the Boardman sizing chart suggests a 55.5 - 57.5 frame size. So it sounds like you've been advised wrongly, so take it back to them, it wouldn't be the first time.

Sounds a bit small to me

I'm 6' and tend to fit best on nothing less than a 56 and as high as a 60 depending on manufacturer and have a 33" leg

My Boardman is a large which I think is around a 57 so two sizes smaller for someone only 2" shorter seems too much to me.

It really depends how it feels to you though as we all have different proportions so you cannot just rely on how tall someone is as they may have short legs and a longer upper body etc

If it feels too cramped to you then it's probably too small!

That sounds a bit small to me. Husband has a Boardman 55.5 and it fits him well. He's 5'10" ish. The 53 frame fitted me well (didn't buy one but tried it for size) and I am 5'7"
If it feels fine then go with it. As others have said, a side on pic of you on the bike would be helpful.

Am I correct in thinking the 53 (Medium) has a 55.5 top tube (I'll have to measure mine) .. I'm 5.7 and ride a medium and that's at the limit of stretch I like to be, so it sounds about right for someone 5.10

Check the boardman sizing as they are generally semi compact frames a medium is more like a 56 cm , i have a small which in reality is a 54 cm top tube even though its listed as a 50 /51 cm on the halfords website but 54 cm conventional on the boardman site , the medium is listed as a 56 cm conventional on the same site
check this to see what you have

if its effectively a small then yes its a bit small as a sm / 54 fits me at 5`7" so a medium should be about right.

It certainly sounds small, critically what is your inside leg? I don't know what Halfords return policy is so you need to check that out to see if they will swap it.

I have a medium boardman road team 2012 or 2013, being a shade under 5'10" and fits well.
IIRC it was listed as a 53cm but not sure where measurement is taken from.

I don't know what Halfords return policy is so you need to check that out to see if they will swap it.

If Halfords don't offer a test ride or give you the opportunity to try the bike once built (if they built it) and they guaranteed you it would fit and/pr measured you for it, then you may have a case that it's not fit for purpose (i.e. you asked for a bike suitable for you and they sold you one that isn't). Obviously this doesn't apply if they made no such guarantee or simply showed you a size chart and you misinterpreted etc. Always best to avoid going down this route though and trying instead to swap under their returns policy/goodwill.
