I've decided I'm not an Assos person

My new Assos FI.Mille S5 bib shorts arrived today, to replace my old sweat eaten ones. Quality product no doubt...

..with the bibshorts came the little wash bag (per normal) and some chamois cream and some washing liquid. Thank you very much Assos, and...

...a couple of booklets about Assos products and some nonsense called 'Manga Yio'... containing vacuous marketing-type slogans about 'emotional income' (or some such) and little else. (Oh, pictures of that fit Assos girl - very nice, but she's clothed!)

...the whole lot packaged in a fancy 3 part cardboard box that is now sitting in the recycling bin.

I suspect the booklets and packaging cost very little as a percentage of the total cost but what a waste. I'd have been happy with just the bib shorts in an envelope!

More importantly, it's talked me out of getting more Assos products! Their stuff is clearly not designed nor intended for types like me. Their book actually states their stuff is not designed with longevity in mind! It's top of the range stuff for people who want 'the best', can afford it and, more importantly, are prepared to replace it every couple of years.Or at least that's the impression I get!

I'm an Assos girl for their chamois cream!! That tingle is hard to beat, babe!!! I've had to stop using it since I've been pregnant because I'm entirely unconvinced that sort of tingle is good for the baby

I buy mine from a cycling shop off a hanger - no packaging, no washing bag and no extras. I wonder if the shop unpack them all then nick the extras?

They still charge the full RRP - I think I'm getting ripped off!

There is *nothing* like assos shorts. They're worth every penny. I've worn mine more than twice a week for 18 months, I've done two long tours in them, they've been through the washing machine regularly without any problems at all (and not always in the wash bag). The chamois lasts for ages and so even when the lycra is shot you can still wear them under training tights. I wouldn't be without them.

I have a pair which are three years old now and I keep meaning to send them off to be repaired. I bought them from a lbs at the time which has since gone bust and didn't get all the paraphernalia. A wash bag might've been handy as they've faded a bit. Very comfy shorts but as the insert is coming away at the sides they rub a bit. TMI

I love Assos bibs too Kirsty. They're the most comfortable ones I've owned by a long chalk.

But I'm not their intended market. I'm not in their target group. I certainly don't identify with their image. Perhaps I'm not a serious enough cyclist!

You're not kidding. I invested in a pair of their bib longs last year and now they have two holes that shouldn't be there down the legs. On top of that, the bulkiness of the padding means I am always sliding on to the padding rather than sitting on top of it and having to re-position myself. It's like wearing a big nappy. When you buy expensive stuff, one of the payoffs is longevity but not with Assos. It's gear for people to go "look at me!"

dhb stuff is great, and you can have about 4 pairs for the price of a single pair of Assos.
