I seem to hate my job more and more and I'm stuck with it. Its got no future, no prospects and I am earning less than I was ten years ago. My Boss is a complete and utter bottom and could not care less.

I'm self employed and my job is international, which means I'm self unemployable in every country in the world.

Buttocks!

Bummer  Trouble is at the mo. 'a' job is better than 'no' job.

High stress levels and depression must be a threat to you.
I really do feel sorry for you.
I hope things turn around for you in the near future.

I found myself in a similar position a couple of years ago. I was self employed and on good money, I had one main client and plenty of other bits and bobs. I worked from home and didn't even wake up until 9am.

But I HATED it.

I took a decision to get a 'real job'. Now my income is less than half what it was and I have to be at my desk at 8am, but I'm a LOT happier!

Now that a couple of years have passed I look back and struggle to remember why I hated my old life so much, but that feeling only strikes me when I look at my finances.

well, at least you have a job - I've been out of work since November 2012 and with 2 small kids that isn't good at all. And because my wife earns more than £105 per week we are not entitled to any benefits at all either - go figure!

EDIT, well we do get working tax credits but that isn't much

£105 a week!!! My wife hasn't earned enough to pay tax for a long time, but we sure couldn't live on her income alone

e-rider, what job were you doing? There must be help that the benefits people should be giving for you... they've got to have made a mistake, can Citizen's Advice help?

I was working as a researcher at a university in the East of England - funding cuts by the government has led to many researchers losing their jobs (or not having their fixed-term contracts renewed) - and there are no new jobs being created. I'm now looking to do something different after 8 years of training for that job - what a waste of time.

Are there any research projects in your field that you could investigate to apply for funding, to take to a university as a package?

The sustainability market is strong and there are loads of government funded training companies awash with Regional Development Fund money sitting unused... you could approach invest4growth- your local council Economic Development Officer would be able to identify companies with RDF funding.
