I went for a hearing test at Specsavers yesterday. After the sit in the booth, wearing headphones and pressing a button stuff, the results are that my left ear isn't perfect, but it's better than my right ear. I now have an appointment next week to have two hearing aids fitted, as in tried out. The person doing the test told me NHS hearing aids are free, but if I wanted 'private' ones they start at £500 each, going up to £2,000. Imagine that, paying £4,000 for somethings easily loseable and probably not much better than the NHS ones.🤔

I went for a walk yesterday. Had my hearing aid in my pocket. Halfway through called in at a pub for a swift half. Sat down outside, faffed around, enjoyed my beer and stood up to go. I happened to look down and saw a hearing aid on the ground.....yep, it was mine. Nearly an expensive error.

I went to Specsavers last year and was confident I'd be sorted with hearing aids - they had shown me the NHS ones, and I was happy with the appearance and service. After they'd tested my ears they said unfortunately because there is a large difference between L and R (L a lot worse) they weren't allowed to precscribe/ offer them. So on to the Docs, who referred to Hospital, who then sent a letter via a contractor Medefer who then telephoned me to find some details/history. Eventually (after not being able to get a word in) I had to say 'Please can I say something?' I then received another letter with a host of inaccuracies. I spoke with Docs (they are very helpful) who suggested if I tried to correct the Medefer report it would delay things even more. I don't hold out a lot of hope, it's been 1 year since this all started. I can't even buy them, because they are not allowed to sell them to me. Any 'secret market' suppliers?

That's it, no expensive private hearing aids for me then as I can lose anything! Besides, do I want to hear things clearer?! I'm already stressed out with decibels when out there, such as banging, popping car exhausts, neanderthals communicating by shouting at each other, industrial tractors loudly rumbling past my flat which is on a main road, plus many other stressful noises! In fact somedays I feel like I need earplugs, not hearing aids while out and about!😒

I have been for a hearing test recently and hearing aids have been mentioned

so thanks everyone for the info!!

but some of the "better" ones apparently make things clearer rather than just louder like they used to a while ago

and if you are not hearing too well then your brain amplifies it all internally so a sudden noise sounds a lot louder to you than other people

but the new types make everything clearer so your brain can settle down and not amplify things
and you can still hear what people are saying and not wonder why they are speaking in a foreign language like I do!!

might also help me hear what some people say to me when I am riding - I often hear someone very clearly
but they say
"arreegh beag fummy wop" or something

Mine are Phonak Bolero M70-M, but they don't really make any difference to the sounds I have difficulty with, only the ones I can already hear.

THat is an internal Specsavers rule I think, unless things have changed drastically in teh last two years.

I haqve a vast difference between right and left (left is far worse), but was able to get them through a local independent hearing clinic in Barry, without any question. And I suspect most independents would have been similar.

Mine were £3000 for the pair, and worth every penny. They have made a massive difference to my hearing, particularly in noisy situations.

they also have bluetooth so I can use them as my headset for Teams calls in work, and for taking hands-free phone calls.
