I've been cycling since May '11, and believe it or not, I've never been beeped by a motorist until today. I was changing lanes on approach to some (red) lights and the chap coming up behind me took exception to my holding him up by, ooh, 3 seconds.

That's it really - I'm now in the club.

I hate it when drivers overtake 50 yards form a red light. I tend to stay in the middle of the lane to discourage them, but every so often some pratt will shoot by, and then brake hard for the light. I just filter past and wait at the front.

I ignored. Mainly because I was performing a tricky manouvere. Had I given him the finger I'd have fell on my arse.

The last time I as beeped (while climbing a 12% gradient on my fixed and admittedly going really quite slowly) I stopped, went to the driver's window and asked if I could help at all. I was ever so polite and accommodating and only held them up for twice as long as they would have been had they stayed quiet. Not the cleverest response, I could have ended up with a beating but I was fairly sure that my colleague wouldn't have done that in public.

I did the same thing when climbing a steep hill and being beeped by a following car. I stopped in the middle of the narrow country lane and asked the driver what the problem was. He made various angry noises culminating with "I've got to get to work" (it was about 8am). He shut up when I pointed out we were on a designated Quiet Lane
