I've never been on a tour

I did a Tour from Southport. The intended destination was the East coast.

I got about 15 miles and came across a village Carnival lasting the week. I pitched my tent and joined in. Got taken in by the locals and had a great time.

Thats proper touring.

It's a very long time since I've done anything that could be described as a tour. However, when I did the most satisfying of all were those where I began by riding away from my doorstep and ended by riding back to it, the only motorized transfers being ferries when appropriate.

That is the other thing I dont get - this riding from front door to front door - using only ferries - it is a wicked ambition and I've done it loads of times - but if I've only got a limited time off and I want to cycle around New Zealand then compromises have to be made

Edit - I lie - conveniently forgot about the trains used to get to the ferries

I have also "City toured" with a Brompton

Train to a City, then a couple of days exploring the City and locality by bike

Then move on

I like a start point and a destination. I'm not sure why, but loops seem less fun.

Having done both, on the whole I think I prefer point to point - a but more satisfying. So, does a RTW count as a loop?

+1 for liking a point to point. I find satisfaction in getting somewhere under my own steam. Circular routes don't appeal as much.

Agree, I need a destination, preferably more southerly & hotter than the starting point. Don't think I'll ever do a loop and not sure if I'll ever go S to N, even though it makes sense wind wise, I live in West Yorkshire, heading towards the sun drives me on!

We always feel much better cycling south towards the Med.
But doing loops is still ok, there is something about leaving home and cycling back.
In 2010 we managed both, unfortunately we haven't the time nor the money to repeat that since

In response to the OP: I tend not to have enough time or money for anything other than touring as a means of transport. Making the trip a bike tour helps me justify the break from a busy schedule. It allows me to use my time off both to visit friends/family *and* get a tour in.

This year I'm visiting family on Lewis and am really excited to be riding there. (Hopefully back too, though not sure yet!)

Circular trips are great. Point-to-point trips are great.

Traveling by bike. *That's* great.

Many years ago I cycled from Newcastle to Berwick upon Tweed long before the route became the "Coast and Castles".

I then cycled to a charity camp in Kent along the South Coast.

A third trip saw me travelling from London to Hunstanton

Which left a couple of gaps so I filled those in, and this became a sequence

My linear tours became a circular loop of the English Border from Portsmouth to Portsmouth

I've done Aberdeen to York but wimped out the rest...in 1986...

Recently I've done two Chiang Mai to Bangkok tours.
