Part of my daily commute is along a canal. At certain times of the day, especially around rush hour it does get a bit ridiculous. The winter months are not too bad but in the spring and summer things can get a bit chocca. It seems its about 30/70 when it comes to polite/impolite cyclists. I'm afraid to say it, but the worst are the guys (and it usually is guys) in the full get up, a la SAS. They treat the path as their own and don't slow down unless they really have to, even under bridges. I don't understand why use a top of the range racer or hybrid to ride along a towpath. Surely the a road would be quicker. What bugs me the most by this small element is they spoil the impression pedestrians get of cyclists.
