Jean Simmons aways seemed to be a perfect English Lady both on and off the screen. I know everyone has to go sometime but it's sad when you hear the news!

My father once had a bit part in a film called Cage of gold starring Jean Simmons in 1950. He was the a guard on the underground at the time and was in a scene with Jean. That was one of his claims to fame.

Jean Simmonds turned down the amorous advances of Howard Hughes apparently, so he set out to disrupt her career. She was also an alcoholic - just listened to someone chatting about her...

Only later on, I think, when her career stalled.

A lot of top-level performers seem to have been 'substance abusers'. The glamour hides what is often a very difficult way to earn a living.

Yes true ASC - should have qualified that but she was also a smoker...this came up in conversation the other day as well.
