Clarkson is a lot more intelligent that his critics make out and his "jokes" are designed to cause outrage with the PC brigade and they fall for it hook line and sinker every time thus guaranteeing him greater popularity EARNINGS

Fixed that ;)

Stewart Lee said that Jeremy Clarkson has outrageously politically incorrect opinions for money. Which is true, winding people up is his business model. Clarkson's not the issue, it's the boneheads that follow him that are the worry.

Every week, to a deadline, in The Times...

Clarkson is very astute and an excellent writer. I disagree with virtually everything he says / writes but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy it.

I have developed a subconscious ignore-list. So when I see a snoozepaper article written by Clarkson/any other waste of space (incl. economist, banker, most politicians etc.) I automatically turn the page.

the Christmas book season has opened. Clarkson manages to get in to the news at the right time every single year
Like Boris Johnson, he knows there's nothing The Common Man likes more than a posh (give or take) irreverent 'buffoon'.

Difference is that Johnson really is a buffoon and Clarkson isn't. He's a smart cookie that portrays that personna. Some of his engineering and military books/programs have been very good.

I don't care much about him any more, but wish the BBC would stop wasting its money paying him.

I haven't watched Top Gear for years.

I do wish people would stop giving me Clarkson books for Christmas. I usually look at them, but get so bored after the first few paragraphs that they sit unopened again until the next clearout, when I hope they make some money for the charity shop.

Sorry, but Boris Johnson is no buffoon. He's a stunningly astute political operator, who's managed to get himself not just elected, but re-elected, by a city with a longstanding loyalty to The Other Side. I rate Clarkson too, but I know who I'd back if it came to an intellectual head to head...

I agree, but Clarkson has achieved his objectives, Boris will only have achieved his when he becomes leader of the Tories. When that happens he'll have proved your point for you and proved himself a success.

(If DC doesn't win a clear majority in 2015 I'd expect that to happen in 2015 or 16).
