I took great pleasure in giving a large bowl of cream of artichoke soup to my elderly hostile mother-in-law and enjoying the spectacle of her sense of superiority being demolished by her farting with every step she took towards the the toilet a couple of hours later.

Well .. about a third of the batch in the photo, went in a big pot of 'fisherman's soup' that was our supper tonight: hunks of tuna in a thick broth with lashings of paprika and lots of veg floating about - ordinarily it would have been potatoes but the artichokes did just as well - believe me after a few bowlfuls of that with crusty bread, you won't want a main course (in fact it is the 'main course')...

Now I'm bloated but the - er ahem - f@rts haven't started up yet.

Apparently carrots are supposed to temper the effects of the artichokes <hollow laughter>

We had a bumper crop of them last year, had a few roasted with other veg...no ill effects. We then then tried a carrot and artichoke soup...

24 hours later we were combing the ground outside, making sure every last one of them was eradicated from our garden, forever

I wasn't too bad, but they made Chuffy quite ill, and the effects of that made me feel ill in turn

You can peel them and coarsely dice them and use them instead of potatoes in a potato (well, artichoke) curry. Really nice.

The thought of combinig curry with artichokes fills me with terror. If we'd tried that I might still be trying to ventilate the house.
