Heard of Jessye Norman's death on the radio this morning. She was 74.

They naturally played a lot of her music through the morning, including Dido's lament which always moves me to tears anyway. The presenter even said that they were debating whether to play this "as it might have been a bit much" but they did right.

Radio 3 have just played her and Rene Fleming singing the Barcarolle from Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann. Not a dry eye in my lounge. A wonderful lady.

Thanks for posting @Profpointy. I hadn't heard, so it's good to know.

I saw her live twice, in A Child of our Time in 1979, and Das Lied von der Erde in 1981. On the latter occasion I'd really gone to see Jon Vickers; you can't do better than that!

RIP and many thanks.
