i know the feeling, i'm just leaving uni having completed graphic design and have yet to find anything

A friend of mine was made redundant a while ago. Now he has time to stay at home, building a run for the chickens and making beer and bread while waiting for an out of court settlement from his former employer. Meanwhile, his wife supports them both by working part time. And he had the nerve to ask for my sympathy, the jammy bugger.

If you did a 3 year course, hopefully, by the time you finished the economy would be a bit more back to normal and you should be able to find a job relevant to your degree.
It would probably show employers that you took a negative and turned it into a good thing. As for the UNI loans, if you do end up without a new job, you don't start paying the loans until you start earning.
If you can't find a new job, I think preparing for what jobs will be available in the future can't be a bad idea...got to take a risk

Keep a close eye on the websites of any organisation you might like to work with. Bear in mind the cost of a job advert in local papers, and how hundreds of people apply for any job going. I am finding that jobs are not necessarily put in the newspapers. I recently found one I would like, not in the paper, but on the relevant website.
I could easily have missed it. In fact, I would have missed the closing date, if I had to phone them and ask them to post a form to me. Fortunately it is a downloadable form, which gives me more time.
On a similar vein. Form filling on-line. Like a lot of tasks it may seem daunting at first, but gets easier with practice. I have had to re-jig what I wanted to say, as sometimes it will not all fit in the available number of character spaces. Now I find it much easier to do forms on line, as there is no risk of messy mistakes.

If you're thinking of going to university get an application in as soon as possible. The government has put a cap on the number of places available this year to limit the amount it has to pay out in student loans so there is likely to be less available in Clearing. I'd phone the admissions tutor of the course you're interested in and get some advice.

Otherwise if you're handy, it might be worth doing a plumbing, bricklaying, carpentary etc. course as there is/will be a major shortage of skilled tradesmen, who can now earn serious money.

Could you then work part-time and study, for one or two years?
I know that the link is to a College a long way from south Cheshire, but it gives you an idea what might be available.
