When we had to sign on, in Norwich, there were a couple of really helpful staff there and they were awesome. The rest just couldn't be bothered. We had an interview for a job that we were a shoe-in for. We were told the job was ours, we just needed to show our faces so that our new employer could meet us and whatnot. The interview was in Cornwall but the job centre wouldn't help us with the finances required to go to the interview. They said that they could only help if the job interview was within 60 minutes travel time of our home. None of our family members could lend us the diesel cost either so we were scuppered. When we moved to Dereham joke shop, sorry job centre the people were way nicer and helped me to get on the New Enterprise Allowance, to start a new business. They send you on a business course - which was quite interesting and I learned tons and then you get £65 NEA benefit for 13 weeks then then for the following 13 weeks you get £33 NEA benefit and then you are on your own.
Our Job Centre advisor would always trawl her data base for jobs for us and was brilliant. Some of the signing on people could not be bothered though, one bloke in particular was abrupt to the point of rude. We actually complained about him as he was so horrible. We applied for anything between 10 & 100 jobs a week via the internet, speculative sending of CVs, job fairs and all sorts. Having been self employed for 30 odd years, in a customer facing environment means that I can't answer a phone, send emails or do admin and needed training courses. I did get a European Computer Driving Licence out of them though. It will go nicely with my HND in IT.
I understand that the JC people do a hard job, especially with the amount of job-dodgers out there but I do think that they should help the people who are really trying to find some work.
