Another good stop is the Brown Bull pub on Lochwinnoch Main Street. I was there today en route from Kilbirnie to Glasgow (ok, I know I didn't get far before having a stop, it just happened to be lunchtime ). A fine pint of Deuchars IPA and nice food. Big open fire in the winter too IIRC, and good bunch of locals.

There's a couple of lamp-posts on the opposite pavement; fine for chaining 1 or 2 bikes to. There's also a wee lane to the right of the pub, I didn't bother looking but it looks like it goes to the back of the pub. Might be suitable bike parking there too.

I use the Ayrshire cycle paths quite a bit, some of the sections through North Ayrshire aren't the best but its an easy ride from Troon down to Ayr if you can follow the paths.
There are some really good back roads round some of the Ayrshire villages like Dundonald and Symington or even Stewarton towards Newton Mearns.

Arran is also definately worth a day out with the bike, cheap ferry and about 56 or so miles round it, big hills big scenery but changable weather!

Oh yeh and a quick stop for an Arran Ale is not a bad idea too!

When you get to Ayr , visit Geordies Byre on the Main Street for a superb pint of ale !!!

Hi guys well we done it on Sat Johnstone to Ayr,found the route ok and easy thanks,but took the wrong turning at the golf course at Troon,instead of going straight on we where cutting across golf greens to get to Prestwick.My that seafront is windy but nice at the same time.My young lad came with us and done the route on a single speed and found it no problem.50 miles total,so a nice flat route,but coming back on the train was a hassle trying to keep doors clear of 3 bikes,then some guy says you should have parked them next to the toilet as there is a long narrow walkway,howcome people always tell you this after the deed is done.

Well anyway thanks to everyone who posted and helped us to make this a nice easy trip
