I have 2 chains and a half decent spare lock, any down sides to joining them to make a longer chain ?
be a bit hard to pedal a bike chain with a padlock onI'm not sure that I'm understanding correctly - do you mean security chain and not drive-train chain?
No, don't do that (ride with YOUR chain that is), it will jam in the derailer. I fixated on chain and just assumed you meant spare link, not lock.be a bit hard to pedal a bike chain with a padlock on
So don't do that: join the chains together with a carabiner.A chain with two locks has two weak points, a thief has two chances to have the tools to overcome the security.
I have seen lots of broken chains, but none of them broke at the quick link. (Having said that, there are a lot more standard links in a chain so if the average reliability of quick links is somewhere close to but less than standard links then perhaps that isn't surprising.)I would say you are reducing its effectiveness.

Assume you will have another lock as your second separate countermeasure..?

A mate of mine used to work in a bike shop. He never bought chains because he saved the odd bits of chain left over when new chains were shortened to fit customers' bikes and connected them together to make full-length chains!

Or maybe i am expecting to much for people to read the post rather than making random assumptionsI think it's time you updated the OP and title!
