I only change my avatar when someone draws attention to the current one, or asks about it. I think they are irrelevant like most internet tricks like smileys for example.
The only avatar I have respect for is simoncc's, because you can tell that he chose something completely innocuous, just to avoid any sort of woefully tedious exchange about why he didn't have an avatar in the first place.
