Every morning in heavy traffic I have to wait for a bit then make a right turn onto the industrial estate that I work on. Every morning I wait sort of near the middle of the road so that I don't get 'trapped' on the edge of the road trying to cross, and I take primary at least 100 yards before said junction. What can sometimes happen is that folk trying to make their way in the world see the small gap I've left between my fragile body at the kerb and razz through without slowing down, or (as shown on the digram below) put their foot down and go past me so fast their wake nearly pushes me into the traffic that is coming to towards me.

So what should I do? Should I keep primary and wait in the middle of the road holding up traffic until I get a chance to make the turn? That's what I'd do in a car, but I know the drivers I 'hold up' won't like that at all, about 100 yards past this junction is a slip road onto the A14 so people seem to like to get their speed up.

My inclination is to start holding primary until it is safe for me to cross, but I'd like to know what you think.

Great diagram

If the road is wide enough I'd be inclined to move over enough to let people pass. No right answer with this really - there's a risk of people overtaking you if you stay in the middle of the road.

Hog the white line in the centre of the road and accept people slipping up your left? Angle the bike so front wheel is on centre line whilst rear is nearer middle of the lane thus blocking the left hand pass? Keep looking over your right shoulder and give 'em a really hard stare if they try an normal right side overtake?

and if that is a crap diagram I wanna see a really good one

I have a similar point on my ride home, the road isn't very wide at all but there is a car park just beside where I wait to take the turn so quite often people use that to go round me. It's very unsettling - especially if I have my left foot on the road!
I really hold the road while I approach that point so the car behind has to slow down and hopefully will think twice about going by me, sometimes it works.
Wouldn't it be nice if the oncoming traffic just let you go???
Sometimes happens. Amazingly.

I would agree with what has been said. If the road is wide enough let people pass on the left. Also indicate strongly so the cars coming behind you know your intention. They will only try to pass on the right if they don't know you are turning right and can't pass on the left. (caveat: or they are numpties!)

There's a similar thing outside Kennington Tube in London, if I want to turn right, I have to wait in the middle of very heavy traffic coming either side of me and they come awfully close!

So, now I take the cowards' way out by pulling over to the pavement and crossing both roads by foot with my bike then getting back on the bike and peddling off.

Not a bad idea at all

How about carrying on down Sproughton Road to the roundabout and going all the way round, coming back up the other way and therefore making it a left turn into Farthing Road. It can't be more than an additional 200 yards or so.
